SCHOOL REUNION

Season 2 Episode 3

Thoughts:

Sarah Jane has been one of the companions of the Doctor. This episode revolves around her, perhaps, to boost Doctor Who ratings by attracting old-time Doctor Who fans to watch Sarah Jane for old time’s sake. Honestly, the plot could be better, but nonetheless consistent with how Doctor Who plots are structured.

Well, at least for me, I get the vibe that this episode gave the possibility that Rose Tyler’s character would not be in the series forever. While the Doctor will certainly be a main stay, Rose’ character can potentially end. This brought more emotions to Rose Tyler as she discovers that there are a lot of things that the Doctor is not telling her.

Funny, because it also felt like two girls are battling each other for the same man and yet, are now in different walk of life. It almost feel like Sarah Jane is the ex-wife of the Doctor. However, old-time Doctor Who fans was actually puzzled since the Doctor and Sarah Jane did not have, in any way, a romantic connection or story line. This might be added by the writers in order to brew conflict for the development of Rose’ character.

And it is also good to mention K-9, the robotic dog and his comparison to Mickey. If Rose=Sarah, then Mickey=K-9. Sad, but true.

Villain Review:

The Krillitanes are the enemy of this episode. They are bat-like monsters in steroids. It actually reminds me of the Reapers because they are similar in appearance.

And yes, they can take form as human beings as well, pretty much like the Slitheens. They also have bat-like properties like heightened senses, hence, loud noise will make them crazy.

Favorite Scene:

I find it funny when Rose and Sarah were talking to each other about the Doctor and then end up laughing at the Doctor. It was like any man’s nightmare. Imagine how awkward it is when your ex-0girlfreind and your current girlfriend talks about you and how you do things. Not only will it be uncomfortable, it will be utterly embarassing. Moreover, this situation gave us the atmosphere that the two ladies has actually a lot more in common to the point that they actually go well together.

It is also a nice thing that K-9 was later on revived in the last few scenes. Yes, its a Disney ending, but K-9 was too nice to just let him go.

Verdict:

This episode is a development to Rose’ character. It also helped form a thread of continuity from the past series of Doctor Who to the new series of Doctor Who. Good character development overall.
